Claude vs Gemini vs ChatGPT vs Kimi vs Grok

A practical, task-by-task comparison of the big chat models — where each one actually wins in day-to-day dev work.

I rotate between five frontier models depending on the job, and they are genuinely different tools rather than interchangeable chatbots. This is the cheat sheet I wish I had when I started.

Claude is my default for coding and long, careful reasoning — it follows instructions tightly and is the strongest at agentic, multi-step work. Gemini shines on multimodal tasks and tight Google ecosystem integration. ChatGPT is the most well-rounded generalist with the deepest tooling and plugin ecosystem. Kimi wins on very long context — feeding it whole codebases or document sets. Grok is the one I reach for when I need real-time, live-data answers.

The takeaway: pick by task, not by loyalty. The gap between "right model" and "wrong model" for a given job is bigger than the gap between any two models on a leaderboard.
